Takoyaki is a ball-shaped Japanese snack made of batter and cooked in a special takoyaki pan. The batter is made of wheat flour and is filled with small piece of octopus, tempura scrap, pickled ginger and green onion. Takoyaki sauce and mayonnaise are used as toppings. Some recipes use ponzu (soy sauce mixed with fish stock, or ‘dashi’, and vinegar), goma-dare (sesame and vinegar) or vinegared fish stock.

Firstly originating in Osaka, takoyaki is considered casual fast food and is usually served at street shops and stands.

Freshly made takoyaki are slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and are very hot so you might want to wait a bit before eating it.

At the Osaka Takoyaki Museum you can find exhibitions that show the history of the ingredients and utensils used to make takoyaki, a theme park, events and games, souvenirs and a take-out menu. Check the link bellow for more information.
