Located in central Tokyo, Tsukiji fish market is by far the biggest wholesale fish & seafood market in the world and also one of the largest wholesale food markets of any kind. It is also one of Tokyo’s biggest attractions.
Over 400 different types of seafood are handled at the market everyday, from cheap seaweed to expensive caviar and extremely large tuna. Over 2,000 tones of seafood imported from 60 countries on six continents, pass thought the market’s halls every day.

The market opens most days from 3 a.m. with the arrival of the products by ship, truck or airplane form all over the world. The products are then unloaded and prepared for the auctions after their value has been estimated. The busiest time is usually from 5:20 a.m, when the auctions start, to 7 a.m. when the auctions end.

Tourists may visit the market daily between 5 am and 6:25am to watch all the proceedings from a designated area. Since there is a limited access of only 120 people per day (admitted in two shifts of 60 people) those interested should arrive at the market and register at the fish information center starting from 4:30 a.m. The entrance is free!
Since the tuna are frozen and must stay that way, it can be quite cold so bringing a jacket is highly recommended.

After watching the auction, visitors can enjoy the tasty raw fish at one of the many sushi counters located in the outer market. The outer market is also where small shops sell traditional Japanese foods such as pickles, tofu, dried beans and noodles, as well as kitchenware.

Make sure you check the calendar before making your visit to the market. Sunday is always closed and it only operates on some Wednesdays.
