If you want to get a feel for old Tokyo, Ueno district is a good place to start.
Getting to Ueno is quite easy. Ueno Station is a major railway station in Tokyo, all local trains on the JR Yamanote and Keihin-Tohoku lines, as well as Tokyo Metro’s Hibiya and Ginza subway lines stop here. It is the station closest to Ueno’s famous bazaar ’Ameyoko’ and Ueno Park.

2

Ameyoko, short for Ameya-Yokocho is an open air shopping bazaar with over 400 shops selling almost anything you can imagine, from fresh fish and fruits to clothing, dried foods, cosmetics, expensive jewellery and other imported goods. It is one of the few places in Japan where bargaining is accepted by the friendly vendors.

3

Another famous shopping site is Takeya, near the Okachimachi station. It is the oldest store in Tokyo and here you can shop for a great number of goods such as Japanese foods, confectioneries, cosmetics, digital cameras made in Japan, clothes and toys, all at very reasonable prices. You can also buy imported branded watches with discounted price.

4

Located across the street from Ameyoko is Uneo Park, one of the most visited sites in Tokyo. It is also one of Japan’s largest parks and home to some museums (Tokyo National Museum, The National Museum of Western Art and The National Museum of Nature and Science), temples and shrines, natural attractions and to Ueno Zoo, Japan’s oldest.

Apart from shopping and sightseeing, the district also offers a great variety of food and restaurants to choose from, so you can easily spend an entire day just in Ueno.
